For people who are good at sewing it may seem weird to think that for years I have had a sewing machine and not used it. I not only have 1 sewing machine, I have 2!
I have actually had a sewing machine since I was 18, a good basic singer machine with all the intentions of making my own clothes whilst I was at college. Never really thought why I would be able to do that considering I hated needlework at school (liked embroidery) and failed my O level in sewing miserably. Anyway, creativity of that kind soon went by the wayside when I realised I didn't have a clue what I was doing and the machine sat gathering dust for many year.
In the late 90's we moved house from the Crook of Devon to Kinross and for some bizarre reason, I got the notion that I didn't use the sewing machine was because it wasn't modern enough and didn't have enough stitches! So it wasn't me, it was the machine fault I wasn't doing any sewing. My lovely husband believed this and bought me a brand new up to the minute Brother ps31. I made some curtains for the living room, Elisabeth's bedroom and a duvet cover.
Then we moved to the US with 2 sewing machine but a different power supply. Excellent reason for not using either one of them until Gordon got a transformer. Then my excuse was "but electricity is so dangerous, I'm scare of using it".
This past year, I have come across so many brilliant craft blogs and it got me to thinking, maybe I should do that! Embroidery, that's easy enough, just need information and inspiration, painting, well, went to college and studied that for 3 yrs, scrapbooking, looks interesting but not my cup of tea. Dolls, Soft toys, bags all using that item I am scared of - the dreaded sewing machine. I wander around the stores knowing full well that Gordon is going to be struggling to think of gift for my birthday - **I know I could get another sewing machine- this time more fancy with a computer and so many stitches you cannot count them.
Sitting in the games room is the Brother sewing machine, looking at me, reproaching me, why don't you use me, I am practically new I have been used so little. So this weekend I got stuck in and what do you know I can SEW just as well on this machine as I can any other machine with all its fancy stitches. I didn't even know it had some embroidery stitches on it as I had used so little and I can do blind hemming on it.
Anyway My machine has been reprieved and now Gordon has to think of something else to buy me for my birthday-any ideas?
This is what I managed to this weekend apart from altering a pair of trousers for me and a pair of shorts for Gordon - never knew I could hem so neatly. It is actually made from the duvet cover fabric I made for Elisabeth the last time I used a sewing machine. I made a pigs ear out of it but for a first attempt I was really pleased with.
