Yeah! the Longhorns win

the Rose Bowl and the national championship. Must admit I was pleased to hear the news this morning, that the Longhorns Football team won the national championship last night, in the last minute of the game. We watched the game until about 10.45 when it looked like they were going to lose, as USC made another touch down. I didn't know anything about American Football until I move here and still don't appreciate the nuances of the game but if its a big game, I will watch in on TV. The Longhorns for all those not from TX, are the local University football team and according to the News this morning, the richest college team in the USA.

There is a blog I read recently bemoaning the state of education in the US and I made the comment that actually having experience both the UK and USA system, it not as bad as its made out to be, at least in this part of Texas ( TX education system rates about middle in the US). However, one of my biggest gripes is the emphasis on sports over here. Sports of any sorts is king in the school system, especially American Football and basketball. My son has a kid in his french class who is the leading footballer in the school. He is an average student but he gets offers of scholarships every week simply because he is a good football player. His college education is effectively free. However, you can bet that the person who is good at science and maths, will be lucky to get scholarships that cover one year, let alone 4. The country is crying out for more kids to be come involve in Science and Maths but how are you going to encourage kids to do such subjects if there the local goofball who is good at sports, gets a better shot than you.

Anyway, Congratulations to the Longhorn Football players.

Bet because I didn't post a pic yesterday, you thought I hadn't drawn anything on the 3rd. Well, I did but it was so bad, I had to continue it last night. Believe me, it was lot worse than this originally. It is done in Oil pastels and pencils at night, with a lamp lit from the right.

I haven't used oil pastels for about 10 yrs. It will be interesting to put all these pics together at the end of the year and see the progress.
