an Anxious Night

was had by all, last night. I decided to do the monthly flea treatments of the dog and cats. My daughter had brought her dog along and I asked when she had last been treated. As I suspected it was a while back, so I offered to do Ayla as well. I got out the normal stuff for the cats- exactly 2 tubes, sorted out the dogs. I had 3 tubes of the Advantage and 1 tube of the K9 Advantix, so I decided to use the Advantage. I then got out the heart worm tablets out. Elisabeth treated Ayla as I did Angus with the flea medication and heartworm . As I was doing the flea medication, I realised I had given Angus the cat's heartworm tablet. Just to check I went back to the cupboard where all the meds are kept and sure enough I had. Figured it wouldn't hurt him although if it had been the other way around it would have be serious.

By this time the dogs were in their respective crates and Skara, our smallest cat had come down, sensing food. I punched out another heart worm tablet and grabbed the flea medication before she fled. As I did it I thought to myself, I'm sure there were 2 tubes in the package before but then I remembered one had fallen out as I was sorting them out, it must have fallen out again. Gordon had Skara by the collar and I began to put the flea medication on, "wow this seems a lot" I thought to myself and then I spotted " this should not be used on Cats". Thats when all hell let loose. We quickly grabbed some paper towel to rub the stuff off and then Gordon ran to get animal shampoo from the bathroom. By now Skara was pertified, screeching at the top of her voice and basically twisting all over the place to get free. The Back of her neck was soaking by now so we left her go and then read the box. There was an emergency number to contact and over the phone we told the woman what had happened.

Skara

Anyway, we had to grab Skara again and wash her all over twice with Dishwashing Liquid (try washing a cat once, then twice!) After that we had to watch her for 12 hours to see any signs of siezures. We put one of those plastic collars around her neck as we didn't want her to lick her fur and then kept her in our bedroom for the night. We had a very sleepless night as everytime she moved we were awake.

This morning she charged straight out the Bedroom, the one room she is normally desperate to get into as she is banned for being it in. She is still very wary of us but she seems OK at the moment, eating as quickly as she normally does. However I will be keeping an eye on her for the rest of the day just to make sure.

Looking on the web this morning, I discovered that K9 Advantix shouldn't even be used in a household with cats as its so toxic to them. The other flea medications don't seem to be much better as cats can be allergic to many of them and dogs are getting more tumours than normal in the areas the medication is applied. So I think I will give these medications pass until I have done more research on them and just take Angus to groomers once a month from now on.

On top of all that, as I opened our Bedroom door I could smell the distinct odour of feaces. Elisabeth's dog had messed it's crate! That's all I needed at 6.10am was to clear up dog's mess!
